That's why we built Onit Dictate (getonit.ai) a 100% free, 100% local alternative to paid options like WisprFlow, SuperWhisper, and Willow.
The concept is familiar: a customizable hot key (Caps Lock by default but change it to anything you want) triggers speech recognition, and the result drops straight into wherever you're typing. What's different is that Onit is entirely free and runs fully on-device. No audio ever leaves your Mac, so it's completely private. We're shipping on macOS today, and an iPhone app is in review with Apple.
Nearly every new dictation app on the market is built the same way: an open-source model, a nice wrapper, a paywall. Onit is built differently. The real value isn't the raw transcription: it's the cleanup that comes after.
We've put serious effort into our cleanup pipeline. We trained our own cleanup models and made them small enough to run locally on your Mac or iPhone, and fast enough that you won't notice them working. Onit fixes the things transcribers usually botch:
Filler word removal — "I've been, uh, working on..." → "I've been working on..."
Number formatting — "three hundred forty six" → "346"
Email formatting — "tim three three at example site dot org" → tim33@examplesite.org
Punctuation — "Hello exclamation mark" → "Hello!"
Lists, headings, and more — all hands-free
We don't have cloud infrastructure costs, so we decided not to charge. And no, we aren't collecting or selling your data. We may roll out paid features eventually (or, in a pinch, build an enterprise offering), but the core dictation feature will stay free forever for our earliest users.
