About
Local Music Organizer (LMO) is a comprehensive native macOS application for people who have built large personal music collections over many years. It works alongside Apple's Music.app rather than replacing it, combining library organization, diagnostics, metadata maintenance, audio-quality analysis, advanced conversion and playback in one local-first toolkit.
Built by an independent developer and long-time music collector, LMO addresses practical problems that accumulate as libraries grow: missing tracks, broken references, duplicate recordings, incomplete albums, inconsistent metadata, rare audio formats and playlists that repeatedly favor the same artists.
Library organization and indexing
A persistent SQLite Library Index stores information about tracks, playlists, file locations and technical audio properties. Library Dashboard, Library Map, Track Usage and Playlist Compare help users understand their collections, inspect playlist relationships and find recordings across large libraries. Incremental refresh avoids unnecessary full-library rebuilding.
Health Check and missing music
Health Check identifies missing files, broken Music.app references, orphaned recordings and path inconsistencies. Users can review findings and relink individual tracks or moved folders while preserving existing Music.app records. Album Completeness detects missing numbered tracks, incomplete discs and conflicting track totals. Artwork Check identifies missing cover artwork.
Duplicate detection and recording comparison
Three separate tools address playlist duplicates, duplicate library records and alternative physical recordings of the same music.
Real-time A/B Audio Compare allows users to listen to two versions of a recording, align passages, temporarily match playback loudness and switch instantly between them while examining live frequency spectra. Neither source recording is modified during comparison.
Audio Inspector and authenticity analysis
Audio Inspector examines codecs, containers, bitrates, sample rates, bit depths, channels and detailed spectrograms. Audio Authenticity Analyzer looks for technical indications of possible lossy-to-lossless conversion, unusual frequency cutoffs, sample-rate upscaling and other format inconsistencies. Results are diagnostic evidence for human review, not automatic judgments about sound quality.
File Maintenance and metadata
File Maintenance provides separate workflows for reviewing audio-file permissions, Finder extended attributes, filename formatting, Music.app tags and supported hidden audio metadata. Eligible encoder, downloader, ripper and promotional fields can be selectively cleaned without re-encoding the audio. Scanning is read-only, and file-changing actions require explicit user decisions with verification safeguards where supported.
Advanced repair and conversion
Repair / Convert processes common audio formats such as FLAC, ALAC, WAV, AIFF, MP3 and AAC, alongside specialist sources including APE, TAK, WavPack, CUE albums, DSF, DFF and SACD ISO. Batch processing, compatible metadata preservation, output verification and explicit handling of original files make complex workflows easier and safer. Standalone audio files can be processed without importing them into Music.app.
Playlist creation and playback
Shuffle Builder creates more varied playlists using spacing rules for artists, related musical projects, albums and repeated titles, while preserving the original playlists.
Three interchangeable built-in players — ORIGINAL, CLASSIC and GLASS — share one playback engine and offer real-time spectrum visualization. ORIGINAL includes detailed technical meters and an interactive waveform, CLASSIC recreates a hardware-inspired Hi-Fi interface, and GLASS provides customizable 3D audio visualization. Compact players are also available.
Privacy, compatibility and pricing
LMO processes music locally on the Mac. It does not require cloud uploads, a separate account or a subscription. Library diagnostics are separate from actions that modify files, and users retain control over their collections.
Available exclusively through the Mac App Store for macOS 14 or later, supporting both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.
A full-featured 3-day free trial is included. Continued access requires a one-time purchase of US$29.99, with regional pricing determined by Apple. No recurring payments or automatic renewals.
